Vanguard 93-65 Dickinson State

It may not have been as easy as the win against La Sierra a couple of days earlier but the Vanguard Lions managed to beat Dickinson State University.

Behind another stand out performance from Claire Lamunu – which has become a common place for the Uganda forward, the Lions defeated the Blue Hawks 93-65.

The win was Vanguard’s seventh in a row and improved their record to 11-1.

The Lions were frail on the defensive end early in the game and the Blue Hawks gave themselves a chance. Vanguard had to work to stifle Dickinson State’s offense.

The home side closed out the first quarter 20-19 but Dickinson State went ahead early in the second quarter and led by 5 points on Paitton Herbst’s 3-ball with 9:11.

However, just over mid-way the quarter and the visitors leading 31-27, Lamunu handed out to Hanna Tabron who connected from beyond the arc. Kandyce Smith knocked down a jumper to put Vanguard into the lead and sparked a run that saw the Lions lead by 14 points (45-31) at halftime

Claire Lamunu continued her impressive form with a team high 25 points, closely followed by Maya Kennedy who contributed 24 points. In the dominant outing, Victoria Chea and Hanna Tabron reached double figures in scoring with 16 and 12 points respectively.

For Dickinson State, Lorna Shepherd scored team high 22 points, Herbst added 16 and Taylor Henningsgard had 14. Megan Klein scored 8 points but matched game high 16 rebounds.

Vanguard’s next game is Tuesday, December 20 against the University of La Verne.
