Barely two weeks after winning the National Basketball League (Ladies) title, UCU Lady Canons went to Nairobi, Kenya and returned victorious from the 10th edition of the Eastern Africa University Games.
The side travelled to Kenya immediately after their end of semester exams and cruised to the title ahead of Kenyan side Strathmore University.
“It was quite easy for us because the Kenyan teams were scared of us,” team captain Vilma Achieng told Kawowo Sports after the games.
The Mukono outfit made their presence felt at their fourth appearance at the Zone V Club Championship in Dar es Salaam, Tanzanian and defeated Kenyan giants KPA.
Despite finishing fourth behind KPA and USIU, Achieng believes the team made a mark the left East Africa paying close attention to the Lady Canons.
“We had enough time to prepare and we believe in ourselves which made it quite easy for us,” the Kenyan center added.
Nick Natuhereza’s charges were fresh from defending the league title after a 4-3 series win over KCCA Leopards.
Zainah Lokwameri, Rosine Micomyiza, Ritah Imanishimwe, Proscovia Arach and Sarah Ageno are some of the players who eased to defending their title.
Both the Lady Canons and the UCU Canons managed to win Gold for the Mukono University. The men’s side defeated Ndejje University in the final to defend the title.
“It’s now time to rest and we thank God for everything,” Achieng, who stayed back for the festive season in her home country, revealed.
