Uganda Cranes vastly experienced midfielder Tonny Mawejje asserts the country’s qualification to the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in 38 years is a self-motivating act.
The Knattspyrnufélagið Þróttur player in the Iceland Premiership is part of the 40 players on the provisional list for Uganda Cranes as the national team prepares for the finals in Gabon come January 2017.
First of all qualifying to the Africa Cup of Nations is self motivating alone.
Every player loves to play at the AFCON. This gives us the extra energies to work even harder to be considered.
Mawejje is one player who has passionately featured for the different Uganda Cranes sides for over a decade now.
On Wednesday, during the mid-morning training, he suffered bruises on the right leg during the training at Kabira Country Club in Bukoto.
To me, such challenges have always left me a stronger player.
I am focused like any of the players in the camp. The response to training has been so great by the players so far and the target at hand to maintain the fitness levels.
AFCON Target:
Whereas each of the 16 countries that will play in Gabon have a clear cut ambition of winning the championship, Uganda too is in the frame.
Mawejje, however, has set the first target at qualifying from the group then winning the championship next.
You can never win the championship unless you qualify from the lower stages.
This is our number one target, then thinking of the championship next.
The countries in our group are respectable but Uganda is focused to shock the continent.
Uganda will be based in Port Gentil. They are in Group D alongside Ghana, Egypt and Mali.
The Uganda Cranes will open up the AFCON 2017 campaign with a date against Ghana Black Stars on the 19th January 2017.
On 23rd January 2017, Uganda will return to the frey against Egypt in Port Gentil before winding up the group with a date against Mali two days later in Oyem.
