Weatherhead’s player-coach Vincent Kasasa hit a brace as his side beat Wananchi 4-3 in a seven goal thriller on Tuesday to secure their first win at the Africa Cup of Club Championships at City Park Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya.
Debuting at the tournament, Weatherhead took the lead through Kasasa but the National Hockey League champions brought matters to level shortly through Derrick Akuwa.
Kenyan, Robin Lawrence Okongo restored the lead for Weatherhead, but last season’s top scorer in the domestic league Thomas Opio made it 2-2 before putting his side ahead for the first time in the game.
It was a game of braces as Okongo, new recruit at the club scored Weatherhead’s third to make it 3-3.
Kasasa then completed his own brace to hand his team all the three points in an all Ugandan affair as they took the country’s bragging rights.
Up next for Weatherhead is a game against Kenya Police on Wednesday.
Wananchi who are yet to register a win at the tournament are out of action tomorrow. They return to the field of play on Thursday against defending champions Easterners [Egypt] as they hope to record a rare victory.
The Egyptians mercilessly beat Weatherhead 14-0 on Sunday.
