Two-time National Basketball League champions, Warriors were just another team in the league last season.
Despite a reported Shs.250m cash in from the enigmatic Jack Pemba, Warriors were only good enough for 15 regular season wins and a first round exit from the playoffs as UCU Canons sent them packing in the decisive game.
After the exit, assistant coach Ronnie Mutebi told Kawowo Sports;
The season was promising. Looking at the personnel we recruited, we tried to bring the best out of each. We had a good time together though the calculations didn’t go well.
Warriors had a blend of energy in Mark Opio, Syrus Kiviiri, Isaac Kamya as well as Ceasar Kizito and experience in Ronnie Kasewu, Steven Okias, Ivan Enabu, Jude Ochen, Philip Ameny, Joshua Etalu and Eric Malinga. Ronald Ssali, Ahmed Temtop, Sam Gombya and Mariel Anyuat (if you will) came in handy.
Head coach, Sam Obol decided to go for energy through the season as experience casually sat on the bench. To say there was no issue with the coach would be burying the head in the sand.
Change in direction
After the dismal show, changes were expected to be made at the club whose supremo is the president of the federation.
According to reports, the side parted ways with Sam Obol and his assistant Ronnie Mutebi is likely to take charge for the forth coming season.
Along with Obol, atleast four players have also left the Kyambogo based club for various reasons. Nigerian Ahmed Temtop and Sudanese Mariel Anyuat have left while veterans Steven Okias and Eric Malinga have retired from the game. Ronald Ssali is reported to have taken a similar direction.
Likely to stay
Mark Opio, Syrus Kiviiri, Ceasar Kizito, Jude Ochen, Isaac Kamya, Joshua Etalu and Philip Ameny are expected to stay at the club.
While Ronnie Kasewu indicated his desire to quit, the guard could be talked into staying with a management meeting set for this weekend.
Ivan Enabu, who also barely played last year, is reported to be heading to Falcons who star player Steven Omony is said to be headed to City Oilers.
