Uncertainty about making trips for tournaments outside the country is a common place for Ugandan sport. It’s even more for basketball.

And it’s no different this year ahead of the Afrobasket qualifiers next month in Cairo, Egypt.

However, the teams started training with the women’s national basketball team, the Gazelles commencing last week with mostly fitness drills.

“Honestly, it’s better than day one. We have focused on the players fitness first and they have responded well,” Natuhereza said after Tuesday training.

The team will have its first practice match on Friday evening against a select side and Natuhereza says it will help them asses who can do what for the team.

“We hope that game will give us a real picture of who can do what for the team.”

Team Uganda is expected to travel to Egypt on February 24 and camp in Alexandria where they will have sessions there to help acclimatize before connecting to Cairo for the tournament.

The event is slated for March 12-18, with Egypt and Kenya expected to be Gazelles’ biggest rivals for the slot available for Zone V at the continental championship.

Sharon Karungi and Peace Proscovia are expected to join the team in Cairo.
