The Zone 4.2 African Individual Chess Championship Qualifiers come to an end on Sunday with must wins for the current top five.
The top two, Fide Masters, Patrick Kawuma and Haruna Nsubuga each need one win to guarantee their place in the Zone 4.2 African Individual Chess Championships due March in Ethiopia while Allan Mathias Ssonko, Thomas Katairo and Joshua Katumba each need one win and at least a draw in their remaining two rounds to secure their place in the annual tournament.
With Micheal Mawanda offering opposition on board three in the seventh round, Katairo faces a somewhat easy opponent of the three, but with his 4points, Mawanda still has a chance of qualifying if like his opponent, he wins all his remaining games.
For Katumba and Ssonko, they come face to face with Kawuma and Nsubuga respectively in tomorrow’s opening round.
Hard nuts for them to crack as the two haven’t lost any game in the competition and are the strongest players in the tournament.
A solitary point for any of the three today will not be enough to qualify if any of Francis Obita [4], Kennedy Namwanza [4], Solomon Lubega [4], Paul Kafuko [4], Sanya Derrick [4] wins both their rounds.
The three have 4.5 points each.
