Gayanthika Abeyratne in the 800m Womens at the Asian Athletics 2015

Lionel Samarajeeva and Gayanthika Abeyratne will board a  Kampala-bound plane for the 2017 World Cross Country Championships due March 26.

The duo are to represent Sri Lanka at the global event to unfold at Kololo Independence Grounds in Uganda’s Capital.

The athletes qualified at the National Cross Country Championships held in Nuwara Eliya, where they won the Men’s and Women’s events respectively.

Kampala will be the fourth African city in the history of the IAAF World Cross Championships to host the tournament after Guiyang of China passed the baton in 2015.

The winner of the 2017 Kampala IAAF World Cross Country Championships will walk away with $30,000 (105 million Uganda Shillings).
