Sundowns intentions to retain the Premier Soccer League title continued to show as they defeated Platinum Stars 2-1 at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Tuesday.
Goals from Themba Zwane and Khama Billiat ensured all three points went into the bag as the Masandawana continued to breathe down the necks of the teams above them in the Absa Premiership.
There were signs of both sides struggling with the wet conditions but Mamelodi quickly began to assert their authority.
And it wasn’t long before the deadlock was broken when Algerian fullback Fares Hachi pulled the ball back for Themba Zwane to slot home from about 10-yards out.
Percy Tau had a couple of chances to double Mamelodi’s lead and also set up Anthony Laffor who could not connect as chances went to waste.
The Platinum Stars had no real chance at goal and Ugandan goalie Denis Onyango was not troubled in the opening half. Bongi Ntuli had Stars’ only real chance of the half which he skied.
After recess, the Mamelodi were made to pay for their wastefulness in front of goal as Platinum Stars restored parity in the 49th minute. Young defender Mlilo beat Onyango with a header from a free-kick.
With the game into the final 10 minutes and all square, Tau and Billiat combined and the latter finished superbly past Mzimela to restore the Sundowns’ lead.
The win took Mamelodi Sundowns to fourth and four points behind leaders Kaizer Chiefs who have played five matches more.
