Claire Lamunu and the Vanguard University Lions have had an incredible season that culminated into winning the conference regular season title.

The Lions hosted Westmont College Warriors on Tuesday with the Golden State Athletics Conference (GSAC) championship waiting for them if they emerged victorious.

And in a closely fought battle that tested both teams to their very limits, Vanguard, led by Ugandan forward Claire Lamunu prevailed in the end, winning 43-40 and were crowned GSAC conference champions.

Vanguard took charge of the first half taking the first quarter 11-7 and the second 17-5.

Westmont College Warriors put on a come back in the second half as the Lion’s offense froze. Warriors who were down by 14 at the start of the fourth quarter started chipping away and came within 3 points (41-38) of Lions.

Lamunu who netted nearly half of Vanguard’s points came to their rescue with a couple free throws, 17 seconds to final buzzer. The former KCCA player piled up 21 points to go with 12 rebounds and 4 blocks.

Lamunu’s double double performance played a huge part in the outcome of the contest and ultimately the conference championship.
