And in a closely fought battle that tested both teams to their very limits, Vanguard, led by Ugandan forward Claire Lamunu prevailed in the end, winning 43-40 and were crowned GSAC conference champions.
Vanguard took charge of the first half taking the first quarter 11-7 and the second 17-5.
Westmont College Warriors put on a come back in the second half as the Lion’s offense froze. Warriors who were down by 14 at the start of the fourth quarter started chipping away and came within 3 points (41-38) of Lions.
Lamunu who netted nearly half of Vanguard’s points came to their rescue with a couple free throws, 17 seconds to final buzzer. The former KCCA player piled up 21 points to go with 12 rebounds and 4 blocks.
Lamunu’s double double performance played a huge part in the outcome of the contest and ultimately the conference championship.
