Not often does a competing crew have a stage named after them.

This time, the Gorillas in the Mist Rally has provided a unique set-up. The rally’s two opening stages have been named after Desh Kananura (12km) and Ambrose Byona (12.6km).

And for Ambrose ‘Omunyeto’ Byona, having a stage named after him is important thing, but winning the stage will however be the ultimate goal.

“Honestly, we are planning for the Byona stage. The fact that its named after me, it would be much better if we won it.”

“We plan to go flat-out in that stage but at the same time very cautious with whatever we do since any slight mistake in Kabale can take you off,” he said.

The stage that runs through Bushuru and Rwakihirwa villages will be repeated thrice.

On top of the stage win, Byona focuses on improving last year’s sixth position to a podium finish in Kabale.

“The podium finish is our main target, we need to add on last year’s results and also improve on Mbarara Rally performance.”

“Our car is prepared so is the whole team. So we are just waiting to battle out for those two things; podium and Byona stage,” he added.

Byona and co-driver Derrick Lubambula are currently fifth on the NRC with 40 points.

Besides being a competitor, Byona also plays a sponsor’s role in the event.

“We want to make Kabale Rally a one desired event for everyone. We have by far done some great things like introducing new stages on totally different terrain.”

“And besides the competition, tourism is another thing the fraternity is proud of with Kabale Rally.”

“I would like to caution all those traveling to Kabale especially the fans to consider safety first.”
