They may not have lifted the premiership title this year but Buzz Pirates left their mark on the rugby scene.

At the start of the season, the team’s target, as told by Denis Etuket, the most experienced player on the team, was to finish in the top two positions – and they achieved it.

“It has been a fair season for us. We set a target to finish in the top two and we did it,” Etuket told Kawowo Sports.

Even with a game to play until the season end, Pirates are comfortable in second place and will end the season ahead of last year’s winners Kobs.

The team’s splendid run of form saw them defeat champions Heathens and Kobs in a space of 7 days.

“The team has been growing with lots of guys playing in their first season in the league. I must say we are moving in the right direction. The belief is growing,” the former Rugby Cranes winger added.

With Boby Musinguzi taking to the helm of the team after the departure of Anthony Kinene, the team got a new look with younger players taking responsibility.

Veteran Denis Etuket, team captain Marvin Odong and fly half Ivan Magomu have ably helped the youngsters rub shoulders with the established players.

“The progress is there for all to see. Last year we were third and this season we are number two, we shall compete to be number one next year

“We have a largely young team that is still learning their trade. The team will keep working hard and challenge for the 7s and Uganda Cup this year,” he added

Bright Future

At the start of the season, all the attention was on Rhinos to try and subvert the status quo and not much attention was paid to Pirates.

Then, Pirates started by defeating the new-look Rhinos before felling giants Kobs and Heathens to make their presence felt.

Full back Timothy Kisiga, wingers Baron Kasozi and Raymond Emanzi have all impressed in their first season in the top flight and promise to make Pirates a much stronger force next season.

“We will be deadly next season. Mark my word,” Wanyama, playing his second season in the top flight, told Kawowo Sports after the team’s win over Heathens
