Vanguard Lions advanced to the semifinals of the 2017 NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship.

Lions defeated William Woods 71-34 at Rimrock Auto Arena to return to semifinal of the National tournament for the first time since 2008.

Ugandan Claire Lamunu, who struggled in the Round of 16 game, returned to the usual self in the quarter final scoring game high 18 points to go with 8 rebounds.

Vanguard edged the opening quarter 12-10 and started to impose themselves in the second quarter stretching the lead to double-figures.

The third quarter, the Lions turned up their defense a notch higher allowing just three points while scoring 20 on the other end.

“This is a great opportunity for us and I’m really excited for our girls.

“We did a great job defensively. We gave up zero offensive rebounds, so our defense was on point tonight,” Lions Head Coach, Russ Davis said after the game.

Maya Kennedy chipped in with 14 points and Victoria Chea added 12for Vanguard.

Kennedy Volkart and Kelsey Scherder led William Woods with 9 points each.

Vanguard will take on Lewis-Clark State College in the semifinals on Monday night.
