2017 Copa National Schools Championships hosts, Masaka Secondary School is already guaranteed of a slot at the annual event by virtual of their status as tournament hosts.

Also tagged ‘Aga Khan’, Masaka S.S is not resting. They are playing in the zonal qualifiers for a formality.

In some of the opening games, they were in demolition mode, destroying Kako S.S and Nyendo Mixed 9-0 and 5-0 respectively.

Against Kako S.S, Ronald Sempala, Badru Nsimbe and Nelson Opio (formerly of Bishop Ngeri) each scored a brace.

The other goals came off the feet of Elly Data, Brunno Mukwaya and the enterprising former Bulo Parents winger Frank ‘Walcot’ Iga.

Data (2), Iga (2) and Sempala were on target against Nyendo Mixed ahead of Friday’s third game with Masaka Town College.

Head coach for Masaka S.S Simon Mugerwa believes the zonal and regional qualifiers will keep his players well in shape ahead of next month’s championship;

As hosts, we need good preparations to keep our candle burning.

This time round, we need to win the trophy and playing in the zonals and regional qualifiers will keep the players fit physically and mentally ahead of the championship. I am so impressed by the performance so far.

Four teams will represent the greater Masaka region at the tournament whose defending champions, Kibuli S.S is also another force to watch.

Other schools with immensely talented players are St Mary’s Kitende, Buddo S.S, Nakaseke International, St Juliana, Mvara S.S, Layibi College among others.

Masaka S.S has been confirmed hosts for the 6th – 20th May 2017 tourney that will attract a total of 60 schools country wide.
