Entebbe based Masavu Football Club has been promoted to the Uganda Premier League.
Masavu’s promotion was confirmed by Airtel Kitara’s 4-2 victory over visiting Mbarara City at the Boma Stadium in Hoima on Thursday.
The loss means Mbarara City trails Masavu by 10 points with just 3 games to play.
The Katabi side bank-rolled by businessman Tonny ‘Masavu’ Sszoi becomes the first club to be elevated the top flight division for the next season 2017/18.
An overwhelmed Masavu head coach, Allan Kabonge Kivewala expressed delighted on learning of the news that rivals Mbarara City had lost.
The CAF ‘C’ certified coach said;
I am so happy. We have been working together as a team and it does not surprise me got promoted on a day when we did not enter the field of play.
I have always told the public I am the messiah of Uganda’s football. I am excited and glory be to God.
To Kabonge, this is the third side that he has guided to promotion after Aurum Roses and Onduparaka Football Club.
Masavu’s promotion to the top flight means a host of clubs – Mbarara City, Nyamityobora, Synergy and Airtel Kitara are still in contention for the two available playoff slots from the Rwenzori Group.
In the Elgon group, Maroons won 4-1 over Lira’s Sporting United as they neared promotion.
Maroons have 42 points from 20 games, 6 ahead of second placed Ndejje University who were held one all by Bright Light.
Three clubs will be promoted to the top flight league by the end of the season.
The two clubs per group (Rwenzori and Elgon) qualify directly with the four other teams engaged in a promotional play off.
