Shakira Ampaire says she was ‘proud’ of her performance at the recently concluded Zone 4.2 African Individual Chess Championships in Ethiopia.

The 2016 National Chess League winner with Kireka Chess Club managed just three victories, drew twice and lost four games as she finished the tournament placed eleventh with 4 points hence missing out on the Woman Candidate Master [CM] title by ½ a point for the second time in a row.

But despite failing to earn the title, Ampaire whose minimum target heading into the championship was a Woman Fide Master [WFM] title left Ethiopia contented with her display.

“Sometimes things don’t go as planned sadly,” Ampaire told Kawowo Sports. “I did so well in the first rounds and I don’t know what happened in the last games that made me lose my games.

“All I can say is all is not lost. I improved my rating by 40+ points and the year has just started. I still have my chance on the title since they are so many tournaments coming up.

“I’m happy for the experience and I learnt a lot. As they say, what doesn’t kill you, so I’m stronger than before and determined to work harder.

“I’m proud of my performance and proud of how much I have improved,” she concluded.
