The 2017 Uganda Muslim Education Association (UMEA) Games have been officially opened at Kakyeeka Stadium in Mbarara on Good Friday.

During a colourful and well attended ceremony, graced by all the participating schools across the country, Hajji Abubakari Kakembo, the secretary general of UMEA, also chief guest, used the platform to laud all the participating schools.

In a special message during the official opening ceremony, Hajji Kakembo saluted the spirit upon which the games are being organized.

“I thank all the participating schools in these UMEA Solidarity games. Keep up the spirit because this is one way the Muslim spirit brotherhood will be well built across the country,” Hajji Kakembo.

He also appreciated the historic Islamic based schools as Kibuli S.S, Nabisunsa Girls, Masaka S.S, Kawempe Muslim, Nyamitanga among others.

In a special way, he showered praise to the Government of Uganda and the ministry of Education and Sports.

Hajji Twahil Kitezeela, the chairperson of the UMEA Games organizing committee thanked host and participating schools, government for generating the sports policy.

Host head teacher Hajjat Maiyuna Namitala of Nyamitanga secondary school thanked the Almighty Allah for the provision of life.

She thanked the UMEA National Executive, UMEA Games organizing committee, officials, media and the schools.

Umar Muhereza, head teacher of Welden High School like the co host from Nyamityanga Girls appreciated the local organizing committee of the games

Also present was Hajji Bruhan Mugerwa, Uganda Muslim Teachers Association president, District Khads among other officials.

Students from Nyamitanga and Madarassa entertainment group provided entertainment before the hundreds of spectators and well wishers.

He saluted the organizers of the tournament who have rotated the games in the different regions of the Uganda, challenging the participants to make optimum use of their talents so that they are exposed further.

Opening matches:

In some of the opening games on the day, hosts Welden S.S whipped Vienna High School 5-0 in boy’s football.

Gerald Ogwette scored a hat-trick as Faizo Bwanika and Faisal Ssebyanzi got the others.

Sentah College and Nyamitanga played to a one all draw in the boys’ group A football match.

Kawempe Muslim S.S and Masaka S.S girls football match played to yet another 1 all draw in girls’ football.

Madina S.S were 45 – 03 winners past Emirates in a one sided netball encounter.

Volleyball, Netball, football, handball, badminton and table tennis are the games being played.

Badminton and table tennis are being played for the first time in the history of the games.

Playing facilities:

The Kakyeeka stadium is the main play ground where football, handball, netball and volleyball is being played.

Other facilities are at Jovoc, Swaddah, Mbarara High and St Joseph’s play grounds.

The closing ceremony shall be held on Easter Monday with the medal presentation after the respective finals.
