Day one of the Easter Classic Chess Tournament witnessed some startling outcomes as untitled Paul Kafuko outthought Fide Master [FM] Patrick Kawuma in the second round.

Kawuma, favourite at the tourney won his first round against unrated George William Kalugo, but was unable to negotiate his way past Kafuko rated 1966 in the subsequent round. The FM now finds himself in an unfamiliar position as he sits eighth after three rounds.

FM Haruna Nsubuga won his games like expected and leads the table with 3 points. Following Kawuma’s shocking loss, Nsubuga remains the only player in the competition with a perfect score.

Nsubuga is followed by Thomas Katairo, Candidate Master Daniel Baagade, Kennedy Namwanza, Simon Gonza and Derrick Sanya who are all on 2.5 points. Kawuma’s slayer Kafuko sits just a place below him on ninth.

Woman Fide Master Goretti Angolikin occupies the tenth position with 2 points while Ampaire Shakira lies 15th with 1.5 points. Ampaire lost to unrated Namwanza.
