Farouk Daku

Uganda’s Farouk ‘Malingumu’ Daku sensationally captured the WBU Intercontinental title after overwhelming Tanzania’s Said Juma Mbelwa in a well-attended bout at Le 63 Lounge and Restaurant in Nairobi, Kenya.

In a fight that lived up to its billing, Daku set the tone early with his jabs and uppercuts. There was non-stop action throughout the encounter, and the Netherlands-based outpointed his opponent after ten rounds to become the new WBU Intercontinental champion.

And for the second time in his career, Daku was beating Mbelwa to the title. The Ugandan defeated Mbelwa in a bout staged here in Kampala in 2015 to capture the African Boxing Union ABU title in a 12 round unanimous decision.

“Since I knew my opponent, I just out-boxed him out like I was on sparring,” Daku, a three time East and Central African champion told Kawowo Sports after the bout.

“I just enjoyed him with a lot of jab jab right in the stomach, jabs on the head hooks and uppercuts. I have no injuries at all.

“He tried to make it tough for me in the 7th and 8th rounds but I controlled him with my movements around the ring. I kept jabbing him with a right hand behind.

“He really came for this title but I outpointed him. I was relaxed doing my thing,” Daku said before thanking the fans who kept lauding him.

“I want to thank the crowds in Nairobi for their big support. Every punch that landed on him was cheered like I was in Uganda.”
