KCCA coach Mike Mutebi believes progressing to the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup will help his players grow their game.
The Ugandan champions made history by eliminating Egypt’s Al Masry 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 aggregate tie over two legs.
“I’m delighted that we managed to make it to the group stage,” said Mutebi, whose side dropped to the competition after failing to reach the CAF Champions League groups. “I believe the continent will help the players grow and have more experience,” he added.
The belief that they have rubbed shoulders with the best teams gives them more confidence and to me that is important.
Targets glory at home
Mutebi, who guided the Kasasiro to their eleventh title last season, his first major in a stop start coaching career says now the target is to retain the league and also clinch a double, one that has eluded the club in their rich history.
You do not jump; you start by walking so the emphasis is to try and retain the league title and perform well in the Uganda Cup. Playing on the continent is an additional incentive.
The champions begin a busy and tight schedule domestically with a home game against URA at Phillip Omondi stadium on Wednesday, then play title rivals SC Villa, Vipers and Express in that order in a space of 10 days.
Though second on the league table with 46 points, a point adrift of leaders SC Villa, the Yellow Lads have three games in hand over the Blues and have a Uganda Cup quarter final against Police to contend with.
