After enduring a terrible start at the Zone 4.2 U-16 Team Chess Championships in Mombasa, Uganda’s U-16 chess team finally won a game.
The youngsters secured their first win in Mombasa in form of a 3-1 victory over Kenya four in the seventh round. Uganda opened the day with a 2-2 draw against Tanzania in the sixth round and were on track to overcome the team that humiliated them 4-0 in their first meeting.
Team captain Denise Veronica Butungi, Marvin Bagonza Atuhaire and Pauline Biyinzika all won their games as Uganda earned their first victory at the Zonal Championships.
Substitute Edgar Ampaire lost his game and together with Alicia Bwengye who made way for him, remain the only players in the team without a point at the double round robin tourney.
Despite their remarkable victory, Uganda remain bottom of the table. Kenya Two won their game against Kenya Three to remain top of the table.
Uganda face Kenya Two tomorrow in the eighth round, and will be looking to avoid a repeat of their first meeting in which Uganda lost 4-0.
