Uganda Premier League:

  • Vipers 2 – 0 Soana

Vipers’ 2-0 result against Soana in the Uganda Premier League at the St Mary’s stadium on Friday brought back tranquility, calmness and cast smiles across faces of many on the famous Kitende footballing hill.

Prodigal son, Tonny Odur was the tormentor for the visitors with a goal in each half in a captivating match graced by a sea of red painted stands.

It had been a fixture brought forward by 24 hours because the home club requested formally to the Uganda Premier League secretariat after the engagement of the facility on Saturday, the day earlier designated to host the game.

Prior to the game, Vipers was a desperate side having gone four games without maximum points and a looming goal drought.

Miguel Da Costa worked closely with Edward Golola as Richard Wasswa and goalkeeping tactician Stephen Billy Kiggundu were missing (following a request to step aside).

Miguel called a couple of changes, handing gifted left footer Aziz Kemba his long awaited start in the famous red and Black attire.

As called back to the starting line for the first time in a long while was Geoffrey Wasswa, Ibrahim Kayiwa and St Mary’s Kitende S.6 student Pius ‘Muzeei’ Wangi.

Each attempt at goal was well cheered by mostly the students’ fans.

Odur slotted home the opener past goalie Franco Oringa 25 minutes into the game to spark off wild celebrations.

He returned with the second almost in similar fashion at the stroke of full time.

Each of the two goals was well celebrated by the fans in the stands, players and the technical bench.

Whereas Miguel hugged Golola for the first, goalkeeper Ismail Watenga ran almost a full pitch distance to join the rest of players in celebrations for the second strike.

Earlier, the visiting team had missed making amends when second half substitute, Patrick ‘Crespo’ Asiku who had replaced Frank Kalanda missed from close range with goalie Ismail Watenga beaten.

The result had earned Vipers the precious three points in the bag, to end their four match winless streak and goal drought.

They are currently 5th position on 39 points, eight behind log leaders KCCA FC whom they visit next Tuesday at the Philip Omondi.

Alex Isabirye’s Soana is seventh with 36 points.
