First half goals from right back Siraje Turyamureba and midfielder Emmanuel Kalyoowa helped Soana edge Onduparaka 2-1 on Saturday at Kavumba Recreational Ground as Alex Isabirye’s men returned to winning ways.
The home side took a 20th minute lead when Turyamureba capitalized on their opponents poor defending, before Kalyoowa rounding off the goalkeeper after another defensive error by the visitors to put Soana in control heading into recess.
Soana started brightly and Turyamureba should have opened the scoring as early as the 7th minute with his screamer, but the shot went just inches away.
Onduparaka who were defensively awful on the day were forced to make first half changes after goalkeeper Richard Anyama and midfielder Idd Babu got injured and were replaced by Nisar Kasim and Okwir respectably.
The Caterpillar’s technical bench exhausted their substitutes at the beginning of the second half when star striker Shaban Muhammad who was playing on pain killers replaced Ibrahim Faisal. His impact was immediately felt as he helped create two successive chances that almost hurt the hosts.
Onduparaka bossed the second half and Shaban had his 18 yard shot saved in the 56th minute by goal keeper Franco Oringa, while Living Kabong shot straight at the goalkeeper’s hands.
The visitors kept battling and Oringa had to make a diving save to prevent Ceaser Okhuti from scoring from the free-kick.
It was not until the 83rd minute that Onduparaka halved the deficit, with substitute Shaban taking advantage of a disjointed Soana defense to find his 12th goal of the campaign.
Onduparaka continued to attack and only the woodwork denied Okhuti the equalizer in the dying minutes of the game as he hit the crossbar from about 30 yards and chances of a comeback ended, with Soana bagging all the three points while Onduparaka’s away form continues to frustrate the fans.
Victory lifted Soana to sixth in the league table dislodging Onduparaka who have won only three games on the road.
