After the Tier 1B tournament that was hosted in Kampala, Uganda Rugby Union president Andrew Owor boldly stated that the Union had lots of things to deal with and that players are not priority.
And, the recent treatment toward the group that took on Kenyan side Kabras Sugar in Kakamega represents the union president’s school of thought.
The 30 players who travelled to Kenya received 70,000 as pocket money for the trip.
They later complained about the food that was served to them while in Kakamega and some of the players had to skip meals for fear of stomach upsets.
One of the players has since revealed to Kawowo Sports that the problems facing the players stem from the leadership of the team.
“It’s just a few of us (players) who can complain but the rest can’t say a word,” the player who preferred anonymity told Kawowo Sports Monday afternoon.
Some of the players have voiced their queries via social media while others have threatened to stop training if the union doesn’t come out with a proper plan of remitting their allowances for the forthcoming Africa Cup.
“We have played a tournament before and at the end they told us there was no money,” the player added referring to the 2015 Tier 1B tournament that Uganda hosted and won.
Because of the union’s customary reluctance to pay the players’ allowances, some decided to call it quits with the team and concentrate on doing other things.
One of the players who featured for the team in the Tier 1A series of games last year revealed that the players only received their allowances for the Kenya game, the last on the calendar last year, in April.
Uganda lost 16-05 before drawing 15-15 in the two games played against Kabras and now have their attention turned to the first leg of the Elgon Cup set for June 10 at Legends Rugby Club.
Meanwhile all the four games of the Africa Cup are set to be played at one venue (Legends) with reports indicating that Legends management has already paid for the games.
