Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Robert Odongkara was massive for Saint George as they picked a vital away point following a goalless draw against Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa.
The highly anticipated Group A clash saw Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane rest Odongkara’s compatriot Denis Onyango with Zambian Kennedy Mweene preferred for the tie.
As early as six minutes, Zimbabwean Khama Billiat forced a good save from Odongkara and three minutes later, the Ugandan goalie did well to deny Liberian international, Anthony Laffor.
Besides keeping the African champions at bay, Odongkara also commanded the backline in front of him with authority as the hosts bossed possession but without a break through.
With eight minutes to the final whistle, St. George Dutch Coach Martin Nooij introduced Ugandan midfielder Yasser Mugerwa to tempo the game in the middle of the pack and he also did well.
The draw leaves the two sides tied on a point with Esperance, who beat 10-man AS Vita 3-1 on Friday now leading the group.
