After defeating defending champions City Oilers in the opening game of the season, Power already have their eyes on the next game and will not be heads over heels because of the result.
The result, according to team captain Joseph Ikong, will only matter if they go on to win more games and register better results at the end of the season.
“It is just one win and we have to focus on bigger things now,” Ikong told the press after the game Friday night.
Power, through Michael Makiadi, scored the first basket of the men’s season and went on to register the first win in the men’s division.
However, if Ikong’s words are anything to go by, the there is a lot to expect from the 2011 winners.
“We didn’t play to our best. We had some bad spells in the game and we have to work on them as the season goes on,” the national team assistant captain said.
Power got off with the right start and executed from their routine quick transition game to lead 15-7 after the first 10 minutes of the game.
They then dismally collapsed in the second quarter. Oilers introduced Jimmy Enabu and new signing Steven Omony and the two temporarily restored sanity in the low scoring game.
Power’s offense was frozen out as they were limited to 10 points against Oilers’ 23 and the four time champions went into the half time break with a 5-point advantage (30-25).
Oilers offence was static in the second half as Paul Odong, Ikong and Isaac Afidra took charge for Power to get the win and go top of the table.
