While the fourth round of the National Rally Championship (NRC) proved a nightmare to several crews, to Hassan Alwi it was a recovery point from the season’s earlier misfortunes.
With the reigning NRC champion co-driver Joseph Kamya calling the notes, Alwi won the third edition of the Fort Portal rally over the weekend.
Alwi claimed the Fort Portal rally win in 1 hour 30minutes and 46 seconds; for his first finish of the season.
Fred Wampamba settled for second overall after putting up an outstanding race throughout day two of the event.
Wampamba and Paul Musaazi were four minutes and 20 seconds behind Alwi.
“It has been a good event. We were doing so well until the last section were our car almost caught fire. We lost some good time there but at least we finished on podium,” said Wampamba.

A second position finish pushes Wampamba to second in the championship. He ties with Christakis Fitidis in the NRC standing with 175 points.
Omar Mayanja and Hussein Mukuye took third position overall.
Christakis Fitidis and Eric Nzamwita moved from the podium positions to fourth position overall following a five minute penalty.

Kuku Ranjit sealed the top five positions followed by Unissan Bakunda and Arthur Blick Jr in sixth and seventh respectively.
In the two-wheel drive category, Fred Senkumba topped the class followed by Musa Kizito and Ismail Otega in second and third.
Meanwhile, only 20 crews finished of the 34 crews that started the event on Saturday.
Current NRC leader Ronald Sebuguzi, Duncan Mubiru, Yusuf Bukenya are among the Fort Portal rally drop outs.
Sebuguzi however maintains his lead in the championship.
The next NRC event is scheduled for June 30th-2nd July in Kayunga.
