Rwanda U-16 boys’ team has qualified for this year’s FIBA Africa U-16 Championships after defeating Kenya in Mombasa on Sunday.

Rwanda defeated tournament hosts Kenya 76-51 to confirm top spot with a game to play.

Moise Mutokambali’s side will finish top of the table regardless of the outcome from their last game against Tanzania.

Rwanda went into the tournament as the defending champions and needed to finish top at event to book a ticket to Zone V at the forthcoming continental showpiece set for August in Mauritius.

Against Kenya, Mutokambali’s side comfortably controlled proceedings and took the the first quarter 18-13 and followed that up with a 20-15 second quarter display. Rwanda then poured in 21 against Kenya’s 13 in the third before sealing the 76-51 victory with a 17-9 run in the fourth.

The boys’ category attracted three teams, hosts Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania that played against each other on a round robin format over two legs.

Rwanda won their first game on Friday against Kenya 73-48 before defeating Tanzania 112-27 on Saturday.

In the girls’ category, Rwanda fell 71-34 in their first game against Egypt but recovered to defeat hosts Kenya in their second game 64-32.

A 77-25 win over Tanzania on Monday morning means Rwanda finish as runners up with Egypt already qualified for the continental event.
