Long serving Uganda women football national team captain Christine Wanyana has officially hang up the playing boots after 12 years of diligent service.
The towering center half, in her early 30’s disclosed the decision to retire from football to Kawowo Sports on Monday;
I have served my country with passion and diligence for almost 12 years. It is time I create space for the young ones coming up.

She also notified the football governing body in the country, FUFA in writing although she is yet to get an official response.
I officially wrote to FUFA and informed most of the people concerned including the president (Moses Magogo) and the coach, Majidah Nantanda.
I am however waiting for the response.
Wanyana believes she will be accorded an official send-off match (testimonial) as she ventures in serving the beautiful game in another capacity altogether as a coach.

As she embarks on the retirement corridors, Wanyana calls the various stake holders upon continued support to women football.
“12 years of service is good enough. I urge the women football advocates and key stake holders to continue supporting the game among the females. We need a lot of support. The game is promising now and the future is definitely bright,” she adds.

Coaching path:
Wanyana, who is believed to have played at least 16 matches for the Uganda Crested Cranes as captain calls it quits and immediately joins coaching.
She is among the few CAF ‘A’ certified coaches in Uganda (only three women have that grade).
Currently, Wanyana is the assistant coach of the Uganda U-20 ladies team and head coach at Toyota Uganda and Kibuli S.S women football teams.
As a player, she will be remembered for her awesome game reading, general intellect, leadership skills and calm display on and off field of play.
