For the first time since its formation two decades ago, Weatherhead [M] triumphed at their own event.

The side coached by Vincent Kasasa beat Kampala Hockey Club Stallions 4-2 on penalties in the finals of the Weatherhead Open to lift the trophy for only their first time.

Weatherhead made their intentions known in the early minutes of the game with a barrage of attacks but the KHC defense was alert on the day to thwart any kind of danger.

The Stallions had their moments too, with forward Samuel Wakhisi coming close thrice but like them, their opponents were quite organized at the back.

And after the entertaining goalless 70 minutes that saw both sides come close, the men in yellow won the game on penalties, crowning the event in style.

It was Robin Lawrence Okongo who took the first penalty and did so in a magnificent fashion, scoring a stunning goal that owed the spectators as he gave Weatherhead an advantage.

Weatherhead’s first two attempts went in and although Alfred Agaba missed, Kasasa and Peter Elolu were rightly motivated as they sent the last two penalties inside and unlike the previous editions; it was them celebrating this time around.

Wakhisi and Timothy Ntumba scored for KHC but Ashraf Tumwesigye and Dulf Musoke missed and the game ended 4-2.

While Wananchi [M] – last year’s champions- bowed out, their ladies were right on track throughout the tourney. The lasses edged Weatherhead Gazelles 1-0 in the finals to lift the trophy.

Weatherhead Gazelles’ Siddy Alum predictably ended the tournament as the top scorer with 7 goals in the Ladies’ section so did Kasasa who top scored with 8 goals in the Men’s.

Wananchi’s Teopista Anyango was named the Most Valuable Player in the ladies’ category while Maxwell Mugisha from Simba bagged the MVP award in the Men’s.

And in the schools category, Annet Mundutu from Kololo SSS took MVP girls while Kawempe goalkeeper Derrick Ongom took MVP boys.

Okongo’s spectacular penalty couldn’t go unrewarded. It was voted the best flick of the tournament.
