Reigning National Hockey League champions Wananchi begin their title defense on Saturday against Kampala Hockey Club Swans at the National Hockey Stadium, Lugogo.
Wananchi start the 2017 campaign as title favorites and go into tomorrow’s game buoyed following their triumph at the Weatherhead Open last weekend. The side beat Weatherhead Gazelles 1-0 in the finals to lift the trophy on Saturday.
With their forward Teopista Anyonga voted the tournament MVP, and the 2015 top scorer Josefien De Ridder back to scoring, Wananchi are confident of retaining the title and the duo will be banked on tomorrow.
De Ridder managed only seven goals last season but with her performance at the Open, she appears to be back in shape. It is just what Wananchi need as the league starts.
KHC will be looking to improve on their head to head. The side lost thrice against Innocent Mbabali’s lasses last season, but were able to beat them in the fourth round.
They will hoping for a repeat of that as their quest for a league title starts.
