Rhino Hockey Club begin their maiden campaign in the National Hockey League on Sunday with a game against last year’s league runners-up Weatherhead Gazelles at the National Hockey Stadium, Lugogo.

The side owned by the Susan Khainza is made up of students from St Charles Lwanga, Kasasa and they kick start they campaign on Sunday.

Fresh in the league set up, Rhino will rely on the experience of Winnie Atim, Gloria Amony, Vero Atima, Annet Awat and club owner Khainza. The quintet played for KHC last season and are the only players in the team to have played in the league.

Against the new side, Weatherhead Gazelles have a chance to open their campaign strongly. With title rivals Wananchi and Kampala Swans facing off in the opener, the Gazelles, with a win have an opportunity to lead the ladies’ division on the first weekend of the campaign, with two likely to share spoils.

Weatherhead know maximum points against teams like Rhino will be paramount as they try to regain league glory. The club last won the league in 2014 and have since had to watch Wananchi, formed in 2014 win back to back titles

Weatherhead enter the 2017 term on a bad note having lost to Wananchi in the finals of the Weatherhead Open last weekend. They will have to move on from that loss and hope for a brilliant start as they seek to end Wananchi’s two-year league dominance.
