Uganda Cranes defender Henry Kalungi in central defense helped Charlotte Independence keep a clean sheet as the side defeated Harrisburg City Islanders 2-0 on Saturday.

The star started the colorful sold out match and didn’t disappoint as Independence debuted with a win at new Sportsplex in Matthews.

Charlotte goalkeeper Cody Mizell impressed as well between the sticks. He made his first save in the 7th minute before Jorge Herrera pounced scoring off a free kick 7 minutes later.

Independence came close again as chaos in the box ensued, the players were unable to convert the scoring opportunity with 23 minutes ago.

Herrera doubled the lead in the second half when his shot bounced off a defender only to be punched in by Alex Martinez.

The capacity crowd of 2,648 erupted into screams as the match approached an hour.

Cody made another terrific save in final 10 minutes when he dived to keep out Islanders after David Estrada had come off for David Spies.

Charlotte closed out winners on the grand opening of their new stadium.
