Uganda Netball She Cranes kicked off the quest for the first Africa Championship title on a sound note with an emphatic 72-29 win against Botswana at Lugogo Indoor stadium on Saturday.

Team captain and the only professional player, Peace Proscovia led the assault with a lion’s share of goals scored – 39 all coming in the first half.

The Lightening Lougborough Goal Shooter scored her first after just 13 seconds into the game.

Goal Attacker Hadijah Nakabuye added 3 goals as the home side was in command 42-14 at the half way mark.

Martha Soigi replaced Proscovia in the third quarter. Nakabuye, Betty Kizza and Wycline Natweta’s places were also taken by Racheal Nanyonga, Desire Obua and Florence Nanyonga respectively.

Soigi and Nanyonga combined efforts for 30 goals as the home crowd that included Vice President Edward Ssekandi, State Minister for Sports Charles Bakabulindi as well as Uganda Cranes head coach Milutin Sredejovic celebrated a strong start to the tournament.

Next Games:

The tournament continues on Sunday with three matches starting at 2 p.m.

Malawi opens her campaign against Zimbabwe at 2 p.m, Uganda will play Namibia at 4 p.m and Zambia will take on Botswana in the final game on the day.

The tourney shall be played on a round robin basis.

In absence of the African heavy weights and reigning champions, South Africa, the host country is highly tipped to win the week long championship that concludes on Thursday, 29th June 2017.
