Weatherhead Gazelles ascended top of the table with a comfortable 4-1 victory over Kampala Hockey Club Swans in the National Hockey League on Sunday.
In a game that last season’s top scorer Siddy Alum didn’t see the back of the net, Joan Andika put Weatherhead ahead in the 17th minute, before Sylvia Oryaro making it two six minutes after as her side went for the break with a two goal lead.
Three minutes after recess, Patricia Namubiru halved the deficit restoring the confidence in her side, but the Weatherhead attack was just too much for the depleted Swans to handle and they let in two more goals.
Oryaro struck her second, Weatherhead’s third in the 46th minute, and six minutes to the final whistle, Pauline Korukundo closed the day with Gazelles’ fourth.
With Wananchi out of action till next weekend, it was victory that took the record league winners to the top of the table. The side now leads the standings with 6points, three ahead of the reigning champions Wananchi although with a game more played.
The two teams face of on Saturday in a top two affair.
For KHC, it was another embarrassing defeat. The side dreadfully lost 11-0 to Wananchi in their first game. They have now conceded 15 goals in just two games, making them the worst defense in the league currently.
They stay bottom of the table with no point.
