Record league winners Weatherhead Gazelles will look to consolidate their stay on top in the National Hockey League when they face off against defending champions Wananchi on Saturday in what will be a heavyweight clash at the National Hockey Stadium, Lugogo.

On the weekend the defending champions were out of action, the Gazelles grabbed the opportunity to go top of the table with both hands when they comfortably beat Kampala Swans 4-1 last Sunday.

It was a result that dropped Wananchi to second having not been involved in the league. Now with the two sides meeting in what promises to be one of a hot affair, Weatherhead will look to tighten the grip atop.

The Gazelles will also look to avenge the 1-0 defeat to Wananchi in the finals of the Weatherhead Open. It was an intriguing battle that went Wananchi’s way, and now with the opportunity presenting itself early in the season, the 2014 league winners will look to avenge that loss.

Weatherhead will need Siddy Alum to display her A game if they’re to upset their opponents tomorrow. The midfielder, scorer of 31 goals last season, didn’t appear on the score sheet last weekend but remains a regular source of goals for her team.

On the other hand, the two-time champions will bank on Doreen Mbabazi. The club’s top scorer last season produced an excellent display in their first game as she notched a hat-trick in Wananchi’s comprehensive 11-0 beating of Kampala Swans.

The side will hope Mbabazi and Weatherhead Open’s MVP Teopista Anyango are in unforgiving mood on Saturday.

Wananchi have played a game less and lie 2nd in the table standings, but victory tomorrow will send them back to the top of the table.
