Uganda’s best bet for silverware at the 10th edition of the IAAF World U18 Championships lies with middle and long distance runners.
A team of 12 athletes will represent Uganda at the track and field event in Nairobi, Kenya from 12th-16th July, 2017.
The team that has three girls and nine boys will depart for the World U18 Championship in Nairobi, Kenya on Sunday 9th July, 2017.
Ritah Alupo will compete in the 200m while the pair of Sarah Chelengat and Esther Chekwemoi will run the 3000m SC race.
The youngster Eric Layeng who stands at 6 feet tall will be Uganda’s hope in the sprints. Layeng has run a 47 this season over the 400m.
Daniel Kiprop and Hosea Kiplangat take on the 1500m while Oscar Chelimo and Titus Kwemoi will fly the flag in the men’s 3000m. Joel Kiplangat and Vincent Chemutai will run the 2000m SC.
“The team is well prepared over all distances with the sprinters based in Tororo and Gombe, while the long distance runners are residing in Kapchorwa,” head coach Moses Asonye told Kawowo sports. “We expect medals in all distances because all the athletes have qualified to be there,” added.
The 12 athletes will be coached by Moses Asonye assisted by Alex Malinga.
The event legible for competitors who are 17 or younger is expected to attract over 2000 participants from 159 countries and is scheduled to take place at the moi international sports center Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya from 12th- 16th July 2017.
