Rugby Cranes head coach John Duncan is happy with the two results registered by the team on the road to start this year’s Africa Gold Cup.
The South African addressed the media Thursday morning at Legends Rugby Club and revealed that the draw in Nairobi and the win in Senegal were a perfect way to start off the campaign.
“We played two extremely tough games against very physical opponents,” Duncan revealed.
“I am quite happy with the growth of the team and the results so far,” he added.
Uganda have played two games and collected six points to take charge of the group.
Duncan’s men played two games in seven days and a 17-16 win in Dakar ensured they start their home season with no loss.
Duncan also revealed that the weather conditions in Senegal affected the team.
Having started the campaign with a 33-all draw with the Kenya Simbas, the Cranes went to Senegal and subjected the West African to their second straight loss in front of their home crowd.
Senegal had earlier fallen to the Zimbabwe Sables in their first game of the continental showpiece.
Last year’s winners, Namibia opened their account with a huge 53-7 win over newly promoted Tunisia.
Namibia now occupy second spot, tied with Zimbabwe on five points but the defending champions boast a better points difference.
Kenya are fourth while newly promoted Senegal and Tunisia are fifth and sixth respectively.
The Gold Cup returns this weekend with Kenya hosting Tunisia in Nairobi while Senegal travel to Windhoek for a clash with Namibia.
Uganda will return to action on June 15 in a clash with bottom of the table side Tunisia.
