Defending champions Wananchi can go top of the table for at least 24 hours with victory over league debutants Rhinos in the National Hockey League on Saturday.
The two-time league winners have played just one game since season start and sit third in the table standings with three points, three below Deliverance Church Uganda and table leaders Weatherhead Gazelles who have played two and a game more respectively, but victory on Saturday will see them regain the top as they boast of a superior goal difference, with the top two sides out of action till Sunday.
Wananchi were in buoyant mood last weekend heading into their clash against the table toppers and hoped for victory and subsequently toppling Gazelles, but that game didn’t happen. It was postponed due to Weatherhead Hockey Club’s visit to Mbarara for their recruitment and development program.
The side will nonetheless hope to ascend atop tomorrow with Weatherhead playing a day later against second placed Deliverance.
Against Rhinos a newly formed side, Wananchi should be able to do just that. The side pummeled Kampala Swans 11-0 in their opening game of the campaign last month. They are expected to produce the same ruthless performance on Saturday.
Rhinos, losers against Weatherhead and Deliverance will hope for a rare victory but a draw will be just okay given their experience in the league and considering the quality of players at Wananchi.
The side coached and captained by Susan Khainza were beaten 3-0 by Khainza’s former team Weatherhead before losing 4-3 to Deliverance. They haven’t yet suffered a humiliating defeat and they will hope the defending champions are in forgiving mood on Saturday.
They lie second last in the table standings.
