Defending champions Wananchi head into their third game of the campaign on Sunday desperate for three points.

The league giants have stomached their worst start in history, with two losses already registered.

Last weekend against table leaders Kampala Hockey Club Stallions, a team they hadn’t lost to since 2015, Wananchi scored first, and although they surrendered the lead, they leveled and looked set to secure at least a point only for Benjamin Mkapa’s strike seven minutes to fulltime to spoil the party.

Wananchi know they need to start winning and they need to do that on Sunday against Rockets, an opponent they annihilated 12-1 last year. Three defeats on a trot is not an option especially for a side that has won the league for the last four seasons.

But given their form and against Rockets who themselves need something from this game, it is not going to be a walk in the park for the defending champions.

Both sides come into the match in dire need of three points having both started the campaign terribly. While Wananchi’s terrible start remains a shock, Rockets’ 5-2 defeat to Simba was somewhat expected. The side struggled to post positive results last term and only managed 5points the entire season.

On Sunday, Wananchi will want to put the two defeats aside and get their campaign going. They will want to be more prolific as only two goals have been managed by the side, and one thing is certain, Wananchi can’t afford to lose tomorrow’s game if they are to favorably contend for this year’s title.

They are already 9 points adrift of the summit with one game to the end of the first round.

Both sides are without a point but Rockets sit bottom on goal difference.
