Defending champions Wananchi [M] emphatically secured their first victory of the new campaign with a 8-1 battering of Rockets on Sunday.

The league giants had gone into the game winless following their successive defeats to title rivals Weatherhead and Kampala Stallions, but were in ruthless mood on Sunday, effectively wrapping up victory with three goals in the first half before turning on another style after half time.

Last season’s top scorer Thomas Opio opened the scoring as early as the fourth minute with his second of the new campaign, before Wananchi’s shirt 11 Joshua Gumisiriza doubling and tripling the lead in the 23rd and 29th minutes respectively to end the first half 3-0.

Shafiq Muleme pulled one back, giving his side hopes of an unlikely comeback ten minutes after the break but Gumikizira was ready to pile more misery on Rockets who lost 5-2 to Simba in their opening match with his third on a brilliant afternoon for the record league winners in the 49th minutes.

And just when it had clocked 50 minutes, Jerome Owori registered his name on the score sheet before the man of the day Gumikizira scoring his fourth goal of the season- Wananchi’s sixth of the day.

Wananchi were not done yet. Emmanuel Baguma and Jordan Achaye had to make sure their names appear on the score sheet, and Baguma scored the seventh before Achaye wrapping up the evening.

Wananchi- top goal scorers last season- had managed only two goals- scored against Kampala Stallions last weekend- prior this mauling.

The result took the defending champions third in the league. Rockets, meanwhile, remain glued at the bottom.
