Wananchi reclaimed the top spot in the National Hockey League table with a commanding display in a 5-0 victory over debutants Rhinos.
It was another afternoon to forget for the newcomers who lost their first two games as the defending champions broke the deadlock in the 18th minute through the league’s leading goal-getter Doreen Mbabazi, before making it two for her side while taking her tally this season to five goals three minutes after.
A ruthless Wananchi ended the tie as a contest in the first half when Winnie Alaro made it three seconds to half time to ensure her team heads into recess with a comfortable lead.
Ten minutes into the second half, Teddy Lucy Achiro joined the party to make it four and with a minute to the end of the game, Naume Makika wrapped up a wonderful afternoon with Wananchi’s fifth.
It was victory that took them level on points with Weatherhead Gazelles and Deliverance Church Uganda, but the two-time league winners lead the table with a superior goal difference.
The Weatherhead-Deliverance game that was to close the weekend didn’t happen because even without UHA’s authorization, the field was hired by National Council of Sports.
Wananchi sit aloft with six points, while Rhinos remain second from the bottom.
