Long gone are the days when discussions about Sports Development on the floor of the Ugandan Parliament were a myth.

More often today, the trend in the 10th parliament has completely changed for the better.

Away from the day’s burning issue of the controversial age limit debate, sports dominated the agenda of the Tuesday session.

A number of topical issues related to sports were discussed by the members of parliament.

When the Uganda Cranes broke the 38 years jinx to qualify for the Africa cup of Nations, Parliament recognized and generous contributed with a lump sum of money to the players and officials alike.

On several occasions, the Uganda Cranes and FUFA officials were hosted at parliament with special sessions dedicated towards discussion of football and sports development in general.

Makindye West member of parliament, Hon. Allan Aloizious Ssewanyana raised the motion of honouring the Uganda Cranes back in January.

Similarly, the same parliamentarian on Tuesday brought to attention the issue of honoring the reigning African Netball champions, Uganda She Cranes.

In unison, each parliamentarian will contribute Shs500,000 towards the noble cause.

A total of at least Shs236M will be handed over to the players and officials who defied the odds to conquer Africa.

“Let me send my sincere gratitude to fellow members of parliament who supported my proposal once again for a contribution of Shs236M as parliament as a token of appreciation to the Uganda National Netball team (She Cranes),” Ssewanyana said.

He was backed by Kachumbara member of parliament, Hon. Patrick Isiagi Opolot.

Last month, the speaker of parliament, Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga pledged to lure all MP’s contribute towards the 2017 Rotary Cancer Run.

The She Cranes won all their five games at the 2017 Africa Netball Championship held at the Lugogo Indoor stadium.

Uganda defeated Zimbabwe, Malawi, Namibia, Botswana and Zambia to lift their maiden Africa title.

2017 Africa Netball Championship:

  • Uganda 67-50 Zambia
  • Uganda 72-29 Botswana
  • Uganda 69-31 Namibia
  • Uganda 66-43 Malawi
  • Uganda 61-45 Zimbabwe
