As the first round of the National Hockey League climaxes this weekend, Weatherhead Gazelles will hope to ascend joint top.

The record league winners entertain reigning champions and current table toppers Wananchi on Saturday in one of the two games that were rescheduled by UHA a couple of weeks ago following Weatherhead’s talent search visit to Mbarara.

The two are the top two sides in the league currently. With both squads seemingly having a genuine contempt for each other, it promises to be an encounter closer to bloodthirsty.

The form of both teams is stellar. Wananchi are fresh from a 7-2 battering of Deliverance that followed a 5-0 win over debutants Rhinos. The aforementioned results preceded Wananchi’s 11-0 mauling of Kampala Swans on the opening weekend of the campaign.

For Gazelles, their start hasn’t been shabby either. A 3-0 victory over Rhinos handed them their first victory of the season in their first game, and were responsible for inflicting KHC their second defeat of the campaign.

While Weatherhead have been out of action for two weeks, majority will agree that it is the right time for these top dogs to face off given their form. Weatherhead, however, will need their right players especially Siddy Alum to hit the stride.

The midfielder, top scorer last season with 31 goals has managed just two thus far, and these came against an inexperienced Rhinos side.

Weatherhead’s sole aim tomorrow is the three points as defeat won’t be an option. The side can’t afford to let Wananchi go six points clear if the latter’s two-year league dominance is to be stopped.

The record league winners currently sit second with 6points collected from two games.

Wananchi are tops in the league with 9 points, and have been without question, the best side in the league. They have been lights out since season start and the dismantling of KHC and Deliverance has made the side seem invisible which makes them the number one title contenders.
