Wananchi [W] took a massive stride towards the National Hockey League title with a hard fought 3-2 victory over rivals Weatherhead Gazelles.

After a cagey start from both sides, Weatherhead, through Pauline Korukundo scored in the last minute of the first half to go into recess with an advantage, but Wananchi were quick to level on the game’s resumption.

It was Faith Achom who restored parity in the 38th minute but Korukundo was in scoring mood as she reinstated the lead for her side.

It stayed like that for much of the game and just when Weatherhead thought they were finally closing in on regaining the bragging rights, the league top scorer Doreen Mbabazi had diverse thoughts as she netted the equalizer with four minutes left on the clock.

For Gazelles, a draw would have still been a good result for them, but that was not what their opponents who have tormented them lately wanted. Maggy Amia clinched the winner with just a minute left of play.

The defending champions now have a nine-point lead on Gazelles, although the record league winners have a game in hand.

Wananchi lead the table standings with 18 points while Gazelles sit second with 9, level on points with Deliverance Church Uganda Who won their game against Rhinos.
