Gloria Achola and Susan Khainza scored late in the game as league debutants Rhinos stunned Weatherhead 2-1 to secure their maiden win in the National Hockey League.

The record league winners took the lead in the 13th minute through Joan Andika and ended the first half with an advantage and all signs pointed towards victory for them, but Rhinos had different thoughts.

With just five minutes left on the clock, Achola equalized before player-coach Khainza scoring the winning goal in the 68th minute, much to the disbelief of spectators.

It was Rhinos – a team that was formed early this year – first three points in the league and what a dramatic way to secure them.

The side had lost all their games prior this and were expected to receive a beating from Weatherhead, only for Khainza and her girls to shock the record league winners, and by doing so, dented Gazelles’ chances of reclaiming the league.

Weatherhead entered the game trailing table leaders Wananchi by 9 points. The point gap remains the same given Wananchi were out of action, but the Gazelles drop a place down to third following Deliverance’s goalless draw against Kampala Hockey Club Swans.

Despite the win though, Rhinos stay rooted to the bottom of the league.
