The NSSF- KAVC International volleyball tournament is arguably the biggest and most awaited event on the volleyball calendar in Uganda.

From the stiff competition, organization to tempting prize monies, the competition has indeed spread wings.

The tournament organized by Uganda’s oldest and most successful club, Kampala Amateur Volleyball Club (KAVC) has been held on sporting merit and the 2017 edition bigger, vibrant and better.

The tournament was officially launched on Tuesday morning with aplomb at the Fitness for Life Gym, just a stone throw away from the one of the three venues to be used – the Lugogo Indoor Arena, which will incidentally be the main venue.

Nothing has changed in the playing format per say with the usual suspects (clubs and institutions still confirming).

Better still, the theme of the tournament that aims at bringing together collaboration of improving the welfare of youth and communities has been maintained as “Promoting community health and behaviour through sport”

Addressing a well-attended press conference, NSSF official, Geraldine Ssali Busulwa reaffirmed the firm’s committement to supporting the tournament and volleyball in general for ages and also announced a Shs80M package for the tournament noted;

We have seen the game progress over the years which is commendable.

Top level competitions such as this enhance the competitiveness of our local teams through exposure to regional peers.

We are pleased to partner with KAVC for the 9th year running to bring an exciting tournament to Kampala.

This international competition gives us an opportunity to contribute to the development of volleyball and nurture youth talent

President Kampala Amateur Volleyball Club (KAVC) Amon Ainebyona expressed his gratitude for the ever growing wave length of the tourney.

“As a club we are delighted to have NSSF once again on board to fuel this tournament. We expect teams from Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Burundi and Tanzania. The main objective is to expose local talents to international levels,” Ainebyona said.

17 local clubs have confirmed to take part alongside 8 foreign clubs.

Three playing venues in Lugogo, MUBS and Namboole will be used for the tournament that spikes off on Saturday and climaxes on Sunday.

Rwanda’s UNIK and Kenya’s Aspire are the men and women defending champions respectively.

KAVC head coach, Shilla Omuriwe Buyungo expressed hope and readiness for the host club to work tooth and nail to win silverware;

We have been training well. There is a lot of hope, we shall vie for the top honours.

The tournament will also feature the finals of the primary and schools competitions after the preliminaries were successfully concluded a week ago.
