Despite losing board three in the ninth round, Kireka A were able to beat Aviation on Sunday in the National Chess League.
Fide Master Haruna Nsubuga shockingly lost to former UCF president Vianney Luggya, but his loss didn’t quite affect the team as the rest won with exception of WFM Gorreti Angolokin who shared spoils with Joyce Kabengano on board five.
International Master Arthur Ssegwanyi who was making his club debut nailed Daniel Kaddu while FM Harold Wanyama on board two hammered Stephen Kisuze, and Simon Isiko beat Peter Maguzi as Kireka won the round 3.5-1.5.
In the tenth round, the table leaders produced a tremendous display hitting Makindye, Wanyama’s former club 5-0. It was a performance that meant their number one position in the league was maintained.
Sunday was a day full of surprises. Bank of Uganda’s David Muwanguzi who is the current UCF publicity stunned Dmark’s FM Patrick Kawuma on board three in the ninth round ending the latter’s flawless run this campaign. The FM had not lost or drawn a game since season start.
Like Kawuma, Walter Okas, on board four was gunned down, and it was Muwanguzi’s brother Morris Sangalo who did the damage. Okas has endured an awful campaign. He has lost three games thus far, winning just five of the ten rounds played so far.
This only means one thing; losing elos. He will be assured of dropping down to the 2200 bracket by the end of the league next month and after FIDE releases the ratings.
Dmark, however, revenged on board one, with Solomon Lubega feasting on Allan Mathias Ssonko, and WFM Christine Namaganda edging Sharon Twongyeirwe who played in place of WFM Grace Kigeni, and the side edged the tie 3-2.
The tenth round saw the side beat Kireka B 3.5-1.5, with Lubega, Bob Bibasa and Namaganda winning their games, while Okas drew.
They remain third in the league, five points behind Kireka who lead with 27, and four behind second placed SOM Katwe who won both their games yesterday.
