Wananchi [M] ended Kampala Hockey Club Stallions’ unbeaten run in the National Hockey League with a hard fought 1-0 victory.

After a barren first half, the defending champions through Jerome Owori notched the lone goal of the day in 42nd minute. It was a goal that proved the difference as Wananchi handed their rivals their first defeat of the campaign.

The Stallions who came from behind to beat Wananchi 3-2 in their first round meet had not tasted defeat this season, but were unable to turn the tables around despite their undeniable efforts on the day.

While they remain top of the table, the loss reduced their chances of winning their maiden league title as Weatherhead are seated second, two points adrift.

And the three points added Wananchi – who are looking to win their fifth successive title – into the mix. They took them to within three points of the summit.

KHC have led the table since the season started, but this loss is likely to prove costly. Bernard Bwire now knows that there is no room for error if he’s side is to realize their dream.

Heading into the third round, they lead the table standings with 19 points, two and three points ahead of Weatherhead and Wananchi respectively.
