West Nile Golf Club have expanded their activities beyond the club and ball sport.

The golfers have decided to form a chess club in the West Nile region.

The new club is expected to officially commence operations on 29th  September , at the NSSF Building in Arua, with the guidance of the chess governing body in the country, Uganda Chess Federation [UCF].

UCF General Secretary Henry Ategeka says the development is timely as the federation is planning to stage an Inter-City tourney.

He said: “West Nile Golf Club wanted to expand their sports activities and so decided to add chess to their program. UCF being the mother body, they contacted us and we had no objection to such a great initiative.

“We are going to help them in every way we can. It’s a good initiative as the federation harbors the same interests of developing the game. It was a blend of great ideas that brought this marriage into existence, and it’s for the good of the game. And it’s timely because next, we plan to have an Inter-City competition if we get plans passed by the executive.”

The club becomes only the third to be formed outside the central region.

The other two include Mbale Chess Club that will make its maiden appearance in the National Chess League next year and Jinja Knights Chess Club who are currently seated 17th in the league.
